What Is the IBPS Clerk Examination?
IBPS Clerk is the commonly used name for the recruitment process through which Customer Service Associates are selected for participating public-sector banks.
A Customer Service Associate generally works at the branch level and supports daily banking operations. Typical responsibilities may include:
- Assisting customers with banking services
- Opening and maintaining customer accounts
- Processing deposits and withdrawals
- Handling cheque-related services
- Updating passbooks and account records
- Supporting cash and counter operations
- Helping customers use digital-banking facilities
- Processing fund-transfer requests
- Supporting Know Your Customer compliance
- Resolving basic customer queries
- Maintaining branch records and documents
- Assisting officers with routine operational work
The exact responsibilities, salary, allowances, probation requirements and posting conditions depend on the participating bank.
IBPS Clerk Eligibility Criteria
The detailed eligibility conditions for CRP CSA-XVI will be confirmed only after its official notification is released. Until then, candidates can use the most recently notified CRP CSA-XV requirements as a reference.
Educational Qualification
Candidates are generally required to possess a graduation degree in any discipline from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government.
The graduation result must normally have been declared by the qualification cut-off date mentioned in the notification. Candidates should possess valid marksheets or degree certificates when required.
Computer Literacy
Operating and working knowledge of computer systems is mandatory under the latest available official notification. A candidate may be required to possess a certificate, diploma or degree in computer operations or to have studied computer or information technology as a subject.
Local Language Proficiency
Candidates apply for vacancies associated with a specific state or Union Territory. They are generally expected to be proficient in the notified local or official language of that region.
Depending on the notification and participating bank’s requirements, candidates may need to read, write and speak the relevant language. Proof of having studied that language may also be required.
Age Limit
The latest completed recruitment cycle prescribed a general age range of 20 to 28 years, with government-approved relaxation for eligible categories.
The exact age-calculation date and permitted date-of-birth range for CRP CSA-XVI should not be assumed until the detailed notification is published.
Age relaxation is generally available to eligible:
- SC and ST candidates
- OBC candidates belonging to the non-creamy layer
- Persons with benchmark disabilities
- Widows, divorced women and legally separated women, subject to conditions
- Ex-servicemen and disabled ex-servicemen
- Other categories specified in the official notification
Candidates claiming relaxation must possess the prescribed certificates.
IBPS Clerk Selection Process
The IBPS Clerk or Customer Service Associate selection process normally includes:
- Online Preliminary Examination
- Online Main Examination
- Provisional allotment
- Document and eligibility verification by the allotted bank
- Local-language verification, wherever applicable
There is no interview for IBPS Clerk recruitment.
The Preliminary Examination is a screening stage. Its marks are not normally added to the final merit score. Candidates who qualify in Prelims are shortlisted for the Main Examination.
Final provisional allotment is primarily based on the Main Examination score, state-wise vacancies, category, candidate preferences, eligibility and other conditions specified by IBPS.
IBPS Clerk Prelims Exam Pattern
Until the CRP CSA-XVI notification is released, candidates can prepare according to the latest notified structure. The Preliminary Examination contains 100 objective questions for 100 marks, with a total duration of 60 minutes.
Each section has a separate 20-minute time limit.
| Section | Questions | Maximum marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes |
| Numerical Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
| Total | 100 | 100 | 60 minutes |
Candidates cannot transfer unused time from one section to another.
Negative Marking
For an incorrect objective answer, one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question may be deducted. An unanswered question does not normally attract a penalty.
Candidates should therefore avoid uncontrolled guessing and prioritise accuracy.

How to Use the Prelims PDFs
Begin with the practice papers without applying strict examination timing. Focus on understanding the correct method and identifying weak concepts.
After completing three or four practice papers, start attempting full-length mock tests under timed conditions.
Maintain an error notebook with the following categories:
| Error type | What to record |
|---|---|
| Concept error | Formula, grammar rule or reasoning method you did not understand |
| Calculation error | Incorrect multiplication, division or approximation |
| Reading error | Important condition, word or instruction missed |
| Selection error | A lengthy question attempted before an easier one |
| Time-management error | Excessive time spent on one puzzle or calculation |
| Guessing error | Question attempted without sufficient confidence |
Do not measure mock-test progress only through your total score. Also monitor accuracy, time spent per section, attempted questions and repeated mistakes.
Students planning to appear for officer-level banking recruitment can also use our IBPS PO Practice Paper and Mock Test collection.

IBPS Clerk Previous-Year Question Papers
Many candidates search for official IBPS Clerk previous-year question papers. However, IBPS generally publishes notifications, information handouts, call letters and examination instructions rather than maintaining a permanent public archive of complete online examination papers.
Most PDFs described online as previous-year IBPS Clerk papers are therefore memory-based reconstructions created from questions recalled by candidates.
Such papers can help students understand:
- Frequently tested topics
- Puzzle formats
- Data-interpretation trends
- English question styles
- Approximate difficulty level
- Banking-awareness coverage
However, candidates should not assume that every memory-based question or answer is an exact reproduction of the original examination.
The latest official notification and information handout should always be given priority. The official notification confirms that detailed examination instructions are provided through the candidate information handout and call letter.
IBPS Clerk Preparation Strategy
Phase 1: Build Strong Fundamentals
Begin by learning basic concepts instead of attempting only mock tests.
A balanced daily foundation plan may include:
- One arithmetic topic
- One reasoning topic
- One English grammar or comprehension exercise
- Twenty minutes of calculation practice
- Vocabulary revision
- Banking-awareness notes
- Current-affairs reading
Beginners should not worry about solving every question quickly during the first stage. Accuracy and understanding should come before speed.
Phase 2: Start Sectional Practice
After covering the basic topics, attempt timed sectional tests.
| Section | Initial practice target |
|---|---|
| English Language | One 20-minute sectional test |
| Numerical Ability | One 20-minute sectional test |
| Reasoning Ability | One 20-minute sectional test |
| Banking Awareness | 25–50 questions daily |
| Mains Quantitative Aptitude | Two data-interpretation sets |
| Computer Aptitude | Short daily revision |
Reviewing a sectional test is more important than simply recording the score.
Phase 3: Attempt Full-Length Mock Tests
During the advanced preparation stage:
- Attempt two or three Prelims mocks per week
- Increase mock frequency near the examination
- Begin Mains preparation before the Prelims result
- Analyse every mock on the same day
- Reattempt incorrect questions
- Reattempt questions left because of time
- Revise current affairs repeatedly
- Maintain section-wise accuracy records
A candidate who analyses 10 mock tests carefully may improve more than someone who attempts 30 mocks without reviewing errors.
Our Best Study Plan for Students explains how active recall, spaced revision and planned testing can improve long-term retention.
Recommended Daily Study Schedule
| Activity | Suggested time |
|---|---|
| Numerical and Quantitative Aptitude | 60–75 minutes |
| Reasoning Ability | 60–75 minutes |
| English Language | 45–60 minutes |
| Banking and current affairs | 40–45 minutes |
| Computer Aptitude | 15–20 minutes |
| Calculation and vocabulary revision | 20–30 minutes |
| Mock analysis or error revision | 45–60 minutes |
The timetable can be adjusted according to the candidate’s strengths, work schedule and remaining preparation time.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Ignoring Sectional Timing
Each section has its own fixed time. Practising only without time limits can create difficulty during the actual examination.
Spending Too Long on One Puzzle
A difficult arrangement may consume several minutes without producing marks. Learn to leave an unproductive set and move to easier questions.
Depending Only on Short Tricks
Shortcuts are useful only when concepts are clear. Memorised tricks may fail when the question format changes.
Preparing for Mains Only After Prelims
The gap between the two stages is limited. Banking awareness, current affairs, advanced puzzles and data interpretation should be started early.
Reading Current Affairs Only Once
Current affairs require repeated revision. Prepare weekly and monthly notes and revise them multiple times.
Guessing Too Many Answers
Negative marking can reduce an otherwise good score. Controlled and accurate attempts are safer than careless over-attempting.
Ignoring the Local Language Requirement
Candidates should verify the language associated with the state or Union Territory for which they apply. Applying without the required proficiency may create problems during joining or verification.
Final Preparation Advice
IBPS Clerk preparation should follow a simple cycle:
Learn → Practise → Test → Analyse → Revise → Repeat
Do not measure preparation only by the number of hours studied. Measure progress by whether:
- Your accuracy is improving
- Your calculation time is decreasing
- Your puzzle selection is becoming better
- Your reading comprehension is improving
- Your repeated mistakes are reducing
- Your mock-test score remains stable under pressure
- Your current-affairs retention is improving
Use practice papers to strengthen concepts and mock tests to recreate examination conditions. Continue preparing for Mains alongside Prelims because General and Financial Awareness requires sustained revision.
Consistent practice, careful analysis and disciplined revision are the most reliable ways to improve your IBPS Clerk performance.
